Cumilla city mayor Arfanul Haque Rifat passes away

Cumilla City Corporation Mayor Arfanul Haque Rifat has passed away. He was 66.

Rifat, also Cumilla city Awami League General Secretary, breathed his last at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore at 6:30pm (Bangladesh time) on Wednesday.

Cumilla-6 (Sadar) constituency lawmaker AKM Bahauddin Bahar confirmed it to the media.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Cumilla City Corporation Mayor and city Awami League General Secretary Arfanul Haque Rifat.

The premier, in a condolence message, said that Arfanul Haque will live in the hearts of the people of this region through his deeds.

Sheikh Hasina prayed for the departed soul and expressed her deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.

Rifat had been sick for a long time due to lung infection. He had to always carry oxygen with him. He had been suffering from stomach complications since last 6 December. In addition, he suffered from pneumonia.

Last Sunday afternoon, he was shifted to a hospital in Singapore by an air ambulance for advanced treatment. He died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday evening, said Rifat’s family members.

On 15 June, 2022, Awami League-nominated candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat won the mayoral race in the election of Cumilla City Corporation. He became the first mayor of the Awami League in this city corporation.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.
