Coastal vigilance persists as Japan eases highest Tsunami alert amid quake aftermath
International Desk
Japan lifted its highest-level tsunami alert responding to a series of substantial earthquakes on Monday.
Despite the reduction in alert levels, coastal residents are strongly advised to stay vigilant and avoid returning home due to ongoing risks of life-threatening waves.
The 7.6 magnitude quake spearheaded seismic upheaval, resulting in fires and structural collapses along the western shores of Honshu, Japan's main island.
The magnitude of casualties remains uncertain, as ongoing developments are reported by the Associated Press.
The Japan Meteorological Agency documented over a dozen quakes in the Japan Sea near Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures around 4 pm.
The aftermath includes damaged homes, some with occupants still trapped, according to government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi.
Wajima city in Ishikawa prefecture witnessed a fire outbreak, leaving more than 30,000 households without electricity.
Primarily, the agency issued a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa and lower-level advisories for the western coast of Honshu and the northernmost main island, Hokkaido.
Several hours later, the alert was lowered to a regular tsunami, signaling potential waves up to 3 meters (10 feet).
Additionally, the region may experience aftershocks in the coming days, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance.
