Coast Guard seized over 4.8 tonnes of banned polythene at Swari Ghat

Bangladesh Coast Guard seized a massive cache of banned polythene bags valued at approximately Tk 72.22 lakh during a drive at Swari Ghat near the Buriganga River in the capital on Thursday.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon said the details in a press release on Thursday evening.
Based on confidential information, an operational team from Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted a special drive near Swari Ghat under Chawkbazar Police Station around 12:30 AM on Thursday. During the search of a warehouse in the area, Coast Guard personnel recovered 4,815 kilograms of banned polythene shopping bags worth an estimated Tk 72,22,500.
No arrests were made during the drive as the owner of the warehouse could not be identified or traced on the spot.
The seized polythene was subsequently handed over to the Narayanganj District Office of the Department of Environment for necessary legal action.
Coast Guard operations to enforce environmental laws and prevent the distribution of banned polythene will continue in the future, the press release added.
