For a glorious contribution in the operation, the Bangladesh Coast Guard tug ‘BCGT Promotto’ and its crew have been awarded a “Letter of Commendation” by the ‘International Maritime Organization (IMO)’ for the first time
Coast Guard Headquarters Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid provided this information in a press release on Saturday.
The press release stated that while anchored at the outer anchorage of Chattogram port in the coastal region of Bangladesh, on the night of 5 October 2024, a terrible fire broke out on an oil tanker named ‘MT Banglar Sourav’ owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC). In the incident of the fire, Bangladesh Coast Guard tug ‘BCGT Promotto’ played an extraordinary role in immediate and effective firefighting and preventing marine environmental disaster.
At the time of the incident, a severe explosion and fire spread through the tanker, which posed a major threat to marine life and the overall environment.
Immediately, Bangladesh Coast Guard began emergency rescue operations. ‘BCGT Promotto’, along with its skilled naval crew, conducted a risky operation to bring the fire under control. The Coast Guard carried out a rescue operation and was able to rescue a total of 48 crew members from the ship. In this operation, amidst severe stormy weather and strong currents, the firefighting activities were successfully completed and simultaneously effective barriers were placed and waste was collected to prevent pollution in the deep sea area by stopping the oil from spreading, making a significant contribution to environmental protection.
For this exemplary and courageous operation, “Letters of Commendation” have been awarded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to BCGT Promotto and its crew.
The IMO authority has highly evaluated the professionalism, skills displayed in this operation, special role in protecting the environment, and respect shown towards international maritime safety conventions.
This honor, received from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the first time in the history of Bangladesh, is a major international recognition. It is not only a matter of pride for the Bangladesh Coast Guard, but also for the entire country. This international recognition proves that the Bangladesh Coast Guard, as a modern and skilled force, is capable of working courageously in any disaster.
