CNG-run rickshaw drivers block Mirpur Road
Staff Correspondent
CNG-run auto rickshaw drivers on Thursday morning blocked the Mirpur Road at the Gonobhaban area, protesting the government move to enforce its fare rates.
Tania Sultana, additional deputy commissioner of Tejgaon Traffic Division, confirmed the blockade movement.
On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) asked the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to book CNG auto rickshaw drivers who charge more than the fare shown in their government-mandated metres. Violators would face Tk50,000 fine or six months in prison.
The penalties were already present in existing laws, but were not enforced.
BRTA has decided to reinforce the law after receiving allegations from different passengers that the CNG auto rickshaw drivers are charging exorbitantly.
The CNG-run auto rickshaw drivers have been complaining for a long time that the vehicle owners extract high rents from them every day, making it impossible to follow metre-based fare rates.
