Clash over land dispute claims 4 lives in Ukhiya

A woman who was critically injured in a clash between two rival groups over a land dispute in Ukhiya's Kutupalong area has died after two days of treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH), raising the death toll in the incident to four.The deceased, Rowshan Ara, 40, was the wife of Mohammad Shahjahan from North Ghumdhum in Naikhongchhari upazila of Bandarban. She was also the sister of Abdul Mannan and Shahina Akhter—both of whom were killed in the initial violence on April 6.Ukhiya Police Station OC  Mohammad Arif Hossain confirmed the death, stating that Rowshan Ara succumbed to her injuries around 1:30 AM on Monday while undergoing treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit.On Sunday morning (April 6), a long-standing dispute over land boundaries between the families of Abdul Mannan and Abdullah Al Mamun escalated into a violent clash in West Para of Kutupalong, under Rajapalong Union. The groups attacked each other with locally made weapons, resulting in three deaths and at least seven injuries.

Those killed on the day of the clash were Abdullah Al Mamun, 45, son of Nazir Hossain; Abdul Mannan, 36, son of Mohammad Hossain; and his sister Shahina Akhter, 38. Mamun was the ward-level ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and served as the khatib of a local mosque.In the aftermath of the incident, both parties filed cases against each other with Ukhiya Police Station. On April 6, Sabina Akhter, wife of deceased Abdul Mannan, filed a case naming six individuals and accusing five unnamed others. On April 8, the wife of Abdullah Al Mamun filed a separate case against 11 named and eight unidentified individuals.Police have already arrested one accused named in the case filed by Mannan’s family, said OC Arif Hossain.Following Rowshan Ara’s death, her body was handed over to her family after an autopsy at the CMCH morgue, under the supervision of Panchlaish Police Station.To avoid further escalation during funeral proceedings, police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, the OC added.
