Cox's Bazar Correspondent
Cox’s Bazar District BNP President and former Member of Parliament Shahjahan Chowdhury has filed a case against five individuals at the Chattogram Cyber Tribunal Court over allegations of false propaganda through social and digital media.
The case was filed on Wednesday afternoon under Section 25 of the Cyber Security Act, 2025. The presiding judge of the court has taken cognizance of the case and directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to carry out an investigation, according to the plaintiff’s counsel, Advocate Sami Uddin.
The accused in the case are Mehedi Hasan Palash, a reporter of a media outlet named Digital Agrayatra; Sultan Ahmad and Iman Hossain, residents of Teknaf’s Sabrang Union; Khan Moin Uddin, a representative of Digital Agrayatra; and Fahim Hasan Sadik.
Among the accused, Sultan Ahmad has been locally confirmed as a member of Cox’s Bazar District BNP.
Advocate Sami Uddin stated that the accused had been demanding extortion from Cox's Bazar District BNP President, former Whip, and former MP of Ukhiya-Teknaf Shahjahan Chowdhury. After failing to extort the demanded money, they published a defamatory and false news report against him on the Facebook page of a newspaper named Digital Agrayatra on June 4.
The report claimed that Shahjahan Chowdhury earned hundreds of crores of taka by rehabilitating Awami fascist leaders after the government’s fall on August 5. The news was reportedly based on false interviews given by two individuals named Sultan Ahmad and Iman Hossain.
The lawyer further added that the individuals mentioned in the report, from whom money was allegedly collected, have no personal relations with the plaintiff. The defamatory report was deliberately spread to tarnish the image of both BNP and Shahjahan Chowdhury. The judge has taken the case into cognizance and assigned PBI to investigate and submit a report within the shortest possible time.
