Broadcast networks struggle as streaming surges, reflecting shift in viewing habits

Tech Desk

Two major developments this week underscore the ongoing decline of broadcast television as streaming platforms continue to dominate the media landscape.

In June, Americans spent more time on streaming services than on both broadcast and cable TV combined — marking a significant turning point, Nielsen reported Tuesday. While streaming first edged out traditional TV in May by a slim margin, the gap widened notably last month.

Streaming accounted for 46% of total TV viewing time in June, led by platforms like YouTube and Netflix. Cable represented 23.4%, and broadcast dropped to 18.5% — its lowest share ever.

“This felt like the right time,” said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen’s senior VP, noting many expected the shift to come sooner. He attributed June's spike in streaming partly to school vacations, as two-thirds of viewers aged 6–17 favored streaming over conventional TV.

Meanwhile, for the third consecutive week, Fox News drew more prime-time viewers than any of the major broadcast networks. The channel averaged 2.4 million viewers during weeknights, topping ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox entertainment.

Despite the trend, analysts say broadcast TV may regain viewership during the football season and the return of new scripted programming.
