BNP leader Maj Hafiz sent to jail on surrender

A Magistrate court in Dhaka on Tuesday rejected the bail petition of BNP vice-chairman Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and ordered to send him jail in 2011 sabotage case.

Earlier in the morning, Maj Hafiz surrendered before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury and sought bail. After hearing on the petition, the court passed the order.

On December 14, Maj Hafiz went to India for his knee treatment. When he was in India, he hass been jailed for 21-month in the case. Besides, he was fined Tk 5,000 and; in default, he has to serve one month in jail.Six other BNP men have also been jailed in the case. They are Maj (retd) Md Hanif, MA Awal Khan, Md Russell, Moinul Islam, Babul Hossain alias Babu, and Alamgir Biswas alias Raju.

Among them, Maj (retd) Md Hanif has been jailed for 21 months while the rest have been sentenced to 42 months of imprisonment and fined Tk5,000 each. Maj Hafiz returned back home from India on March 3.

According to case statements, the accused persons held a rally in Dhaka's Mohakhali area on June 4, 2011 and obstructed police to perform their duties. They also assaulted policemen and vandalised and torched vehicles.

Kamrul Hasan Talukdar, sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station, submitted the charge sheet in the case on 29 April 2014.
