Bid to grab property by assaulting 76-yr-old mother-in-law: SI Hanif accused of influencing alleged perpetrators in Badda
Staff Reporter:
Serious allegations have emerged that a 76-year-old woman and her family have been subjected to physical and mental abuse, assault, and death threats in an alleged attempt to force the transfer of her property to others in North Badda, the capital.
The victim claims that a woman reportedly known as a source of Sub-Inspector (SI) Hanif of Badda Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), along with her family members, has been instrumental in the alleged attempt to unlawfully occupy the property.
On October 15, the victim, Mst. Mazeda Khatun, 76, filed a written complaint with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Police of the DMP's Gulshan Division, seeking intervention in the matter.
According to the complaint, Mazeda Khatun and her husband, Md. Shafiqul Islam, permanent residents of Tetultala Road in North Badda, have allegedly been subjected to prolonged pressure from a group attempting to unlawfully occupy their property and transfer its ownership into their names.
The individuals named in the complaint are Humayra Islam Maisha ( 20); Majirun Nesa (42); and Md. Ariful Islam (48).
The complainant alleged that after her family opposed what she described as unlawful demands, her son, Azharul Islam, was first assaulted and subsequently implicated in a case she claims was fabricated as part of a conspiracy, resulting in his imprisonment.
She further alleged that on October 9, when she visited Kashimpur Prison to see her incarcerated son, the accused individuals verbally abused and physically harassed her there as well.
The complaint further states that at approximately 11:15 p.m. on October 10, while Mazeda Khatun was at her residence, the accused allegedly attempted to forcibly take possession of the property, demanding that she transfer ownership to them.
When she resisted, the 76-year-old woman and her sister were allegedly assaulted with repeated punches and blows after being grabbed by their hair, leaving them seriously injured. They were also allegedly threatened with death.
The family further stated that when they took steps to construct a building on their own land through a development company, they faced what they described as unlawful obstruction.
The complaint identifies Majirun , the second respondent, as someone who allegedly works as a source for SI Hanif of Badda Police Station.
According to the victim's family, the accused individuals have allegedly continued their criminal activities by taking advantage of SI Hanif's alleged instigation, patronage, and misuse of official authority.
The family has called for an impartial investigation into the allegations against SI Hanif and demanded strict departmental action if the allegations are substantiated.
The family, which says it is currently living under serious security concerns, has reportedly filed two separate written complaints in connection with the incident—one with Badda Police Station and another with Konabari Police Station in Gazipur.
Mazeda Khatun has appealed for urgent intervention by the authorities to ensure the safety and security of herself and her family, prevent the alleged unlawful occupation of their property, and take strict legal action against those responsible following an impartial investigation.
Copies of the written complaint have reportedly been sent to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at Police Headquarters, the DMP Commissioner, and the office of the relevant Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) for their information and necessary action.
When contacted for comment regarding the allegations, Majirun Islam, the accused daughter-in-law, reportedly said, “The DC will call me about this. Why have you called me? I am going to the DC's office now. Please end the call.”
SI Hanif of Badda Police Station was contacted several times for comment, but he did not answer the calls. He also did not respond to messages sent via WhatsApp.
Mohammad Ruhul Kabir Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Gulshan Division, assured that necessary legal action would be taken.
Separately, SI Hanif has also been accused of visiting a woman's residence late at night in civilian clothes, conducting an allegedly unlawful search, and taking gold jewellery and cash with the assistance of his associates, while allegedly issuing threats and intimidation.
The woman concerned has reportedly submitted a written complaint to the DMP Commissioner regarding the incident.
Further details of the separate allegations will be presented in an upcoming report.
