The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has asked banks to provide account-related information about former speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and her family members.
In a letter, the anti-money laundering agency instructed banks and other financial institutions to send to it the account-related documents of Shirin Sharmin, her husband Syed Ishtiaque Hossain, their son Syed Ebtesham Rafiq Hossain, and daughter Lamisa Shirin Hossain, and Md Shafiul Islam, proprietor of The Subhana Traders.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury resigned from her post on Monday.
The speaker’s resignation came 27 days after the fall of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Hasina stepped down from her position and fled to India on 5 August. Subsequently, the president dissolved parliament, and an interim government took office on 8 August.
Shirin Sharmin was elected the speaker on 30 April 2013 and held the position continuously since then.
On 27 August, a murder case was filed against her and 17 others, including former commerce minister Tipu Munshi, in connection with the death of goldsmith Muslim Uddin, 38, who was shot dead in Rangpur.
Shirin was elected as a member of parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.
