Betna River losing its navigability in Satkhira

Satkhira Correspondent

The local  people have been facing problems as  Betna River losing its navigability. The riverbed became elevated as it filled up, just like the fish enclosures, canals, and wetlands.

As a result, during the monsoon season, the lack of proper drainage caused waterlogging. In the rainy season, all the sluice gates of the canals must be kept closed to prevent river water from entering the localities.

On both banks of the river, brick kilns have been established by occupying char (river islands) one after another. Raw bricks are produced there. Some influential local individuals have illegally occupied the river's char by constructing embankments without any official lease.

As a result, with no proper drainage system, both urban and rural people continue to suffer from severe waterlogging. In such a situation, civic leaders strongly urge the government to take action to prevent flooding and save the river
