For the first time in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Agricultural University Extension Center (BAUEC) and the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) administration are set to celebrate 'Farmers' Day' to promote the adoption of new technologies, raise awareness, and enhance skills among farmers.
The event, themed "Expanding Farmer-Friendly Technologies is Our Commitment," will take place on January 30 at the university campus, with the participation of 300 farmers. The day will feature a farmers' rally,Seminar, farm visits, seed distribution, and an award ceremony for the best vegetable garden cultivators. Six best farmers will be honored with crests and certificates.
The program will begin with a farmers' rally in the morning, followed by a discussion session at the Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium. The Vice-Chancellor of BAU, Professor Dr. A.K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, will attend as the chief guest. Special guests will include syndicate members, deans, directors, and other university officials.
At a press conference held on Tuesday (January 28) at the Department of Agricultural Extension Education, BAUEC Director Professor Dr. Mohammed Nasir Uddin outlined the objectives of the event.
He stated, "We have initiated Farmers' Day to encourage farmers to adopt innovative, farmer-friendly technologies and to raise their awareness. To our knowledge, there is no nationally recognized Farmers' Day in Bangladesh. In 2023, the BAU administration issued an order to observe the day annually on the last Thursday of January, but it was not implemented. With the support of the current administration, BAUEC has now taken the initiative to celebrate this day.
