
Barishal’s famous 'Amra' gets GI product recognition

Barishal’s renowned seasonal fruit, the hog plum (locally known as Amra), has officially been registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product.The announcement was made by the Deputy Commissioner’s media cell at midnight on Wednesday . In a formal event held at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy (State Guest House Sugandha), Adilur Rahman Khan, Advisor to the Ministry of Industries, and Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Advisor to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, handed over the GI registration certificate to Barishal Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delwar Hossain.It is mentioned that Barishal’s Amra is not just a delicious fruit; it also represents the region’s heritage, culture, and agriculture-based economy. Its unique taste, nutritional value, and versatile uses have made it popular across the country. In Barishal's Hindu communities, it is a long-standing tradition to serve tangy Amra at the end of meals during special occasions, a practice known as presenting the "last plate."Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delwar Hossain stated that the GI registration of Barishal’s signature fruit will significantly enhance its reputation and demand in both national and international markets, thereby contributing to the prosperity of agriculture in the southern region of the country.
