Bapa’s Memorandum to Rangpur DC for saving Shyamasundari Canal

On the occasion of 20th Environment Day, a memorandum has been given on last Wednesday to the Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur by Bapa to protect Shyamasundari canal flowing through Rangpur city.

This memorandum was handed over to Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mobasheer Hasan demanding the eviction of the illegal occupants of the traditional Shyamasundari Canal, the life line of Rangpur city, the canal's decontamination and re-digging on an urgent basis.

At that time, advocate Shamima Akhter Shirin, convenor of Bangladesh Environment Movement (Bapa) Rangpur district branch, member secretary Rashidus Sultan Bablu, executive member of Bapa and general secretary of Rangpur City Press Club Humayun Kabir Manik, general secretary of Bangladesh Photojournalists Association Asaduzzaman Afzal, lecturer Ahsan Habib Rabu Professor Delwar Hossain, Mir Pallab, NGO Director Kabdur Rahim Mukul, Green Voice Central Committee Member Sarat Ahmed among others were present.

In the memorandum, the 171 illegal occupiers of Shyamasundari made a strong demand for reclamation and restoration of land. Besides, they expressed the opinion that if the traditional Shyamasundari canal is beautified, it will play a role in protecting the environment and will enhance the beauty of Rangpur city.
