Attack on journalists in Gowainghat : Main accused Humayun arrested, sent to jai

Sylhet Bureau

The prime accused in the attempted murder case of journalists in Gowainghat, Humayun Ahmed, has been arrested in a joint operation by RAB-9 and RAB-10.

He was apprehended from the Chankharpul area under Bangshal Police Station in Dhaka and later sent to jail.

Humayun Ahmed, a resident of Chailakhel Ashtamkhanda village and son of Abdul Kader, has multiple allegations against him. Reports indicate that he falsely identified himself as a representative of My TV in Gowainghat and was involved in extortion and various illicit activities. His elder son, Sanowar Hossain, is a joint general secretary of the banned organization Purba Jaflong Union Chhatra League.

The case stems from a brutal attack that took place on March 17 at around 11:00 PM, when Humayun Ahmed, along with his three sons and a group of 15-20 individuals, ambushed and severely injured journalists near the Jaflong Bridge. The victims included Dulal Hossain Raju from Bangla TV, Salman Shah from Nagorik TV, Ibrahim Ali from Ananda TV, as well as journalists Shakil Ahmed and Naeem Ahmed.

The attackers, armed with locally made weapons, intercepted the journalists' motorcycles and assaulted them. During the attack, Humayun Ahmed and his sons reportedly snatched a motorcycle belonging to Salman Shah, along with two mobile phones, a video camera, a wireless microphone, and Tk 1,80,000 in cash from Dulal Hossain Raju.

Local residents rescued the injured journalists and rushed them to the Upazila Health Complex. Due to the critical condition of Dulal Hossain Raju, he was later transferred to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

Following the attack, a case was filed, prompting Humayun Ahmed and his sons to go into hiding. Five days later, on Saturday night, RAB tracked him down and arrested him from Chankharpul in Dhaka.

Confirming the arrest, OC of Gowainghat Police Station, Sarkar Tofayel Ahmed said, Humayun was apprehended using advanced technology. He also confirmed that efforts to arrest the remaining suspects are ongoing.

He was previously expelled from the Gowainghat Press Club due to his involvement in various criminal activities. On Monday afternoon, he was sent to Sylhet Jail.
