A court has granted a three-day remand for former law minister Anisul Haque in connection with the murder of worker Ashik Mia during the anti-discrimination student movement in Kanchpur, Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
On Wednesday (February 5), police sought a five-day remand in the court of Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Noor Mohasin. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Zakir, representing the state in the District and Sessions Judge's Court, stated that Ashik Mia’s mother, Kulsum Begum, filed a case at Sonargaon police station on August 14. Earlier, on August 4, during the anti-discrimination student movement in front of Sinha Garments on the Kanchpur highway, Ashik and other protesters were fired upon indiscriminately following the direct orders and instructions of former law minister Anisul Haque and other accused.
Ashik was shot in the chest and collapsed on the spot. Around 15-20 injured individuals, including Ashik, were first taken to Al Baraka Hospital. Seeing the severity of their condition, doctors later transferred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Ashik succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on August 8. Following this, former law minister Anisul Haque was shown as arrested in the case. The prosecution believes more information will emerge after the remand.
Earlier, at around 9:30 AM, Anisul Haque was brought to the court under tight security. Following the hearing, an eager crowd chanted slogans, calling him a "thief" and demanding the "death penalty."
