Syed Manzur Elahi, prominent businessman and former caretaker government adviser, breathed his last at a Singapore hospital on Wednesday morning.
Syed Manzur, the founder and chairman of Apex Group, was suffering from old age complications and was aged 83 at the time of his death.
Mutual Trust Bank Managing Director Syed Mahbubur Rahman has confirmed Syed Manzur’s departure.
Syed Manzur was the founding chairman and the chairman of Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB). He was the first in the country to export leather-made shoes.
In 1972, he left his job in a multinational company to take up business. About four years later, he bought state-owned Orient Tannery and transformed it into Apex Tannery. Apex Footwear, founded through these initiatives, is now the country’s leading shoe exporter.
He was a two-time caretaker government adviser in 1996 and 2001.
