Members of the Ansar and Village Defence Party (VDP) cleared artificial blockages in the Katakhal canal in Keshabpur upazila of Jashore on Thursday, saving nearly 600 bighas of submerged Aman paddy crops and protecting local aquatic resources.
Torrential rains and waterlogging had pushed paddy fields in Padmabil and Morshinabil under 10 No. Satbaria Union to the brink of destruction. The waterlogging was exacerbated by opportunistic fishers who erected bamboo fences and nets along the Katakhal canal in Komarpur, blocking natural water flow.
Upon being informed of the crisis, local Ansar-VDP members led by Team Leaders Md. Ali Hossain, Md. Talib Hossain, Md. Rajibul Islam, and Ansar Commander Md. Yasin Ali launched an operation to clear the obstruction and restore drainage.
During the drive, Ansar-VDP members recovered and destroyed on site approximately 4,000 meters of illegal "China Duari" nets set up across the canal, preventing the destruction of fish fry and aquatic biodiversity.
The Keshabpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer, and Upazila Agriculture Officer inspected the spot during the operation and lauded the force for their swift intervention. Local farmers noted that the timely clearing of the drainage canal saved them from impending financial ruin.
