Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque to be designed as Masjid-e-Nabawi
Md. Tanzim Hossain, Chattogram City
The historic Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque in Chattogram is set to undergo a transformation to resemble the iconic architecture of Masjid-e-Nabawi.
Preserving its nearly 400-year-old Mughal-era structure, the mosque will be developed with a modern design to accommodate the needs of worshippers, according to Religious Affairs Advisor Dr. A. F. M. Khalid Hossain.
During his visit to the mosque on Friday, Dr. Khalid stated that the redesign aims to meet the aspirations of worshippers while maintaining the mosque’s historical and architectural significance. The Department of Architecture has already completed soil testing and a digital survey. The design will be finalized by December, and the development work is scheduled to begin with the foundation stone laying in January.
Initial Funding from Kuwait Charity Fund The project’s initial phase will be funded by a Tk 10 crore grant from the Kuwait Charity Fund, which has already been deposited into the ministry’s account. Additional funds, if required, will be arranged from the Islamic Foundation and the ministry’s budget, Dr. Khalid confirmed.
Blending History with Modernity "The mosque is an exceptional example of Mughal architecture. Development work will be carried out while preserving its original structure. The design will ensure optimal utilization of space to accommodate a significant number of worshippers," said Dr. Khalid.
This transformation is expected to turn the Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque into not just a place of worship but also a symbol of Chattogram’s rich heritage, blending historical significance with modern innovation.
