Awami League (AL) backed candidates won 9 chairman posts and independent 4 in the union parishad polls of Sylhet District on Sunday. In the 3rd phase of Union Parishad elections on Thursday, the election of 16 UPs of Sylhet district has been completed. The results of the remaining 16 were announced overnight.
According to the announced results, 9 Awami League candidates, 4 Independent, 3 Awami League rebel candidates have won. Voting has been postponed in one union.
According to the results, Awami League's Shah Olidur Rahman got 5,496 votes for the boat symbol in Silam Union out of 5 unions of South Surma Upazila of Sylhet. His nearest rival Mujibur Rahman got 4,452 votes for the horse symbol. In this union 6 candidates are contesting. His nearest rival Shahidur Rahman got 4,013 votes for the horse symbol. A total of six candidates contested in the union.
In Jalalpur, Awami League's Wech Ahmed won the boat symbol with 8,991 votes. Mohammad Nesharul Haque got 4,995 votes for the horse symbol by getting the second highest number of votes. 4 candidates contested in this UP. In this union 4 candidates are contesting for the post of chairman.
In Daudpur, Awami League's Atiqul Haque Atiq won the boat symbol with 7,301 votes. His closest rival said. Nurul Islam got 3,094 votes for the pineapple symbol. Here 4 candidates took part in the election.
Awami League rebel incumbent chairman Fakhrul Islam Shaista has won the boat defeat in Moglabazar UP. He got 4,365 votes for the horse symbol. His nearest rival Chhadrul Islam of Awami League got 3,518 votes for the boat symbol.
Independent candidate Fakhrul Islam has won the Jaintapur Union No. 2 by getting 5,048 votes. His nearest independent candidate Alamgir Hossain lost the horse symbol by 3,641 votes and Awami League nominated candidate Abdur Razzak (Nauka) lost.
Independent candidate Sultan Karim (two pages) has been elected in Charikata UP No. 3 with 4,582 votes. His nearest rival, independent candidate Shah Alam Chowdhury (Autorickshaw) got 2,215 votes.
Independent candidate Baharul Alam Bahar (Pineapple) has been elected in Darbast Union No. 4 with 10,111 votes. His nearest rival Mohammad Qutb Uddin of Awami League got 8,139 votes for the boat symbol.
In Fatehpur Union No. 5, Awami League nominated candidate Rafiq Ahmed was elected with 6,794 votes. His nearest independent candidate Abdur Rashid (Horse) got 4,963 votes.
Kamruzzaman Chowdhury of Awami League has been elected as the boat symbol in Fatehpur Union No. 6 with 2,736 votes. His nearest independent candidate and former chairman ABM Zakaria (Chashma) got 2,065 votes.
