Health centers in Chattogram are witnessing a rapid rise in patients suffering from cold, cough, fever, and respiratory issues. According to doctors at the emergency department of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, around 150-200 patients are visiting daily with these symptoms. Experts attribute this surge in cases primarily to seasonal changes and worsening air pollution.
Dr. Iftekhar, a medicine specialist at Chattogram Maa and Shishu Hospital, explained, “The changing weather is causing widespread issues like colds, coughs, and other cold-related problems. The hot days and cooler nights make it difficult for the body to adjust to these fluctuations. Additionally, air pollution is complicating the situation further, as dry, dust-laden air increases the risk of these infections.”
Emergency doctors at Chattogram Medical College Hospital have also reported an increase in patients experiencing respiratory distress. They are advising people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to take extra precautions during this period.
Tanjina Nasrin, a schoolteacher from Andarkilla who suffered from cold and fever about a month ago, is still struggling with persistent coughing. She shared, “The antibiotics initially helped, but the cough returned. An X-ray revealed an infection in my lungs.”
Asiful Islam, a resident of Bahaddarhat, said, “My children are constantly dealing with colds and fevers. They fall sick repeatedly every few days.”
According to the Health Directorate and the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control, and Research (IEDCR), the seasonal transition period typically sees an increase in flu and influenza cases. The IEDCR monitors infection levels weekly and categorizes them into medium, high, and very high levels. Recent assessments indicate that this year's prevalence of seasonal ailments like colds and fevers is higher than in previous years.
Dr. ABM Abdullah, a renowned medicine expert and Emeritus Professor, remarked, “It’s natural to see the spread of cold, cough, and respiratory issues during seasonal changes. However, everyone should remain cautious and adhere to health protocols.”
The sharp rise in cold, cough, fever, and respiratory issues in Chattogram, exacerbated by seasonal change and air pollution, is becoming a serious public health concern. Experts emphasize caution, especially for children and those at higher risk. By maintaining awareness and following health guidelines, the risk of infection can be somewhat controlled.
