ACC summons ex-IGP Benazir

Staff Correspondent

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday ordered former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed to be present at its office on 6 June to quiz him in connection with his indulgence in corruption.

Confirming the development to the Daily Sun, ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain said the commission has already frozen all bank accounts of Benazir and his family members and ordered the authorities concerned to seize his all immovable assets.

Besides, the commission also summoned Benazir’s wife and his daughters to appear at its office on 9 June to face interrogation for their involvement in the corruption, said a source within the commission seeking anonymity.

Benazir Ahmed was IGP from 15 April 2020 to 30 September 2022. Before this, he also served as Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The United States on 10 December 2021 imposed human rights-related sanctions on the RAB and seven top officials of the agency, including Benazir Ahmed, then IGP.

The ACC in its allegation claimed that Benazir and his family members have accumulated a huge amount of wealth by abusing power.
