A mother and her two children have died after a landslide in Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua Upazila.
The incident occurred in the Segunbagicha area of Jarulbania in Ward No. 6 of Shikkhali Union around 3am on Sunday, said Md Saiful Islam Joy, the Upazila executive officer.
The dead were identified as local resident Momtaz Begum, 32, and her two daughters Toha, 8, and Moyna, 13.
They were sleeping when the landslide struck their house and trapped them.
Moderate to heavy rain had been falling intermittently in Pekua throughout Saturday, said Joy, citing locals. Around midnight, it intensified and became heavy. Early in the morning, a section of the hill over the home of Momtaz and her husband Sarwar Alam collapsed.
“The sleeping mother and her two daughters were trapped by the soil. Hearing the screams of the other family members, locals rushed to the spot. But they were unable to rescue them.”
The bodies were recovered by members of the Upazila administration and Fire Service personnel later in the day.
The bodies are still at the house and legal action will be taken over the incident, UNO Joy said.
