Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj
A clash between two factions of the BNP erupted in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, on Thursday afternoon, leaving at least eight people injured.
The violence, which involved gunfire and physical assaults, was sparked by a dispute over control of the jhut business at the Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ).
The situation was brought under control with the help of army personnel and local police, said Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam of Siddhirganj Police Station
“While the situation was challenging, it was eventually brought under control with the help of law enforcement and military personnel,” he said.
According to locals, the conflict was triggered by a rivalry between the associates of former Metropolitan Chhatra Dal president Rakibur Rahman Sagar and BNP leader Ruhul Amin. The confrontation escalated when Ruhul’s group attacked Sagar’s supporters, leaving several injured.
As the situation worsened, gunshots were fired, and at least three motorcycles were set ablaze. Among those injured was media worker Toffazzal Hossain, who sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Khanpur Hospital. His colleague, Mostak Shawon, who accompanied him to the hospital, said that Toffazzal’s condition was critical, with suspected broken bones in his arm and back.
Rakibur claimed the attack was orchestrated by supporters of Awami League leader Moti, including Ruhul, Sazzad, and others, over long-standing business rivalries. He alleged that his men were assaulted and that several vehicles were set on fire during the clash.
