55 voluntary organisations demand construction of sustainable embankment in Parshuram

Feni Correspondent

A huge human chain was  held in Parshuram, Feni demanding construction of sustainable embankments on Muhuri Kuhua and Silonia rivers on Tuesday.

. The flood victims have made 5-point demands, including construction of embankments through the Bangladesh Army, in the human chain.

The  programme  was held on the Parshuram-Feni main road in front of the Parshuram Upazila gate at 11 am. Members of more than 55 voluntary organizations from Parshuram and Fulgazi participated in the human chain.

In addition, the speakers have blamed the officials of the Water Development Board for the construction of embankments on Muhuri Kuhua and Silonia rivers in the past. They have complained about many irregularities by the concerned contractor organizations.  Every year, the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia embankments break, and the Water Development Board has strongly demanded that the army build embankments instead of building embankments.

Local residents claim that the allocation for flood control is worth thousands of crores of taka every year, but the Water Development Board and the concerned contractors build six embankments at a time, instead of the allocated money. As a result, the residents of the upazila face extensive damage including houses, flower culverts, crop lands and ponds in the floods every year.

Recently, 31 embankments in Parashuram and Fulgazi upazilas broke due to the breach of the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers. More than 30 villages were flooded and lakhs of people became waterlogged. People were angry with the officials of the Water Development Board as the embankments broke without recovering from the terrible flood of 2012.

Organized by the Sammilita Swachhebi Organization of Parashuram and chaired by Imam Hossain Sajeeb, a representative of the Sammilita Swachhebi Organization, a large number of people from different walks of life, including flood victims, participated in the human chain. The members of the 55 voluntary organizations participating in the human chain made five demands in the human chain.

The first demand is that the flood control project of the Water Development Board should be implemented as soon as possible and the construction of the beri dam should be carried out through the army. The second demand is that the executive engineer of the Feni District Water Development Board should be removed and brought under punishment. The third demand is that the Water Development Board should hold public hearings every month with local residents and the general public. The fourth demand is that effective steps should be taken to build new dams and dredge canals. The fifth demand is that all those involved in the recent dam construction, including the contractor, should be brought under the law.

The human chain was addressed by Masum Chowdhury, who lost his house in the collapse of the embankment of the Muhuri River in Paschim Alka, President of the Parashuram Press Club MA Hasan, volunteer organizers Shasul Alam Shakil, Md. Mostafa, Kazi Yusuf Bappi, Hakim Ali Joy, Chowdhury Rakib, Enamul Karim Azad, Maulana Mohammad Abu Taher Bhuiyan, Md. Naeem, Md. Yunus, Shahidul Afsar, Abdul Quader, Abu Hanif Helal, and others.

At that time, members of all volunteer organizations of Parashuram Upazila, including political leaders, people of all classes and professions, participated in the human chain.
