5 injured as BSF charges batons inside Bangladesh area

Kurigram Correspondent

At least five Bangladeshi farmers sustained injuries at a border area in Kurigram on Friday noon after India’s BSF personnel charged baton on them for protesting against the Indian security force’s illegal entry into Bangladesh territory.

Later, the BSF border violators retreated to Indian territory as Bangladeshi locals, armed with sticks, went to resist the border incursion.

Locals alleged, BGB was present at the scene but remained as bystanders.

In response, Lieutenant Colonel Shakil Alam, chief of Lalmonirhat-15 BGB camp, told reporters that BSF beating Bangladeshis inside Bangladeshi territory is "not an easy task." He will enquire after the matter, nonetheless, he said.

Local BGB personnel confirmed the attack took place. Gorakmandal Border Observation Post member Delbar said the situation is calm now.

BGB and locals said that a group of farmers spotted 12-13 BSG personnel almost 500 yards inside Bangladesh border near the Balatari border pillar-930HS in Fulbari upazila, Kurigram. The Indian border violators belonged to the BSF Narayanganj-138 battalion.

As the farmers went to protest the BSF incursion, a heated exchange erupted, and subsequently the BSF personnel resorted to charging batons on the protesting locals. The incident left Shamsul Haque, 50, Jabed Ali, 55, Kashem Ali, 50, Tajul Islam, 40, and Ripon, 35, injured.
