35 injured in Kaliakair gas cylinder blast

At least 35 people, including a number of women and children, got injured in a gas cylinder explosion in Terir Chala area of Gazipur’s Kaliakair on Wednesday evening.

Of them, 30 injured were admitted to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

“Apart from men, there are women and children among the injured. They are being treated in the emergency department. At least 10 of the injured have been identified so far,” in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost Inspector Bachchu Mia told the Daily Sun.

The victims who have been identified are Maidul Islam, Md Kuti, Md Ariful, Yasin, Soleiman, Md Akash, Noor Nabi, Nirab, Moshammat Shilpi, and Mohammad Naeem.

The incident took place in the residence of Shafiqul Islam Shafiq in Kaliakair area around 6pm.

Locals in the Kaliakair area said that Shafiqul Islam Shafiq brought a gas cylinder in the afternoon. Around 6pm, as he attempted to connect it to the gas burner in the kitchen, the cylinder began leaking.

At one point, he hurled the cylinder onto the street where it ignited upon contact with the clay stove of a makeshift stall beside the road, causing it to explode. This incident resulted in injuries to approximately 35 individuals on the road.

The Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (BFSC) informed that the force learnt about the incident around 6pm, just before Iftar on Wednesday.

“Two of our units rushed to the spot and took control of the situation,” Rakibul Hasan, duty officer at BFSC told the Daily Sun.
