Police on Friday arrested three students with alcoholic drinks after their car rammed a motorbike from behind, instantly killing a BUET student at a security checkpost in Rupganj, Narayanganj on Friday.
Two other BUET students were critically injured in the road crash, likely the result of a drink-driving.
The deceased Muhtasim Masud, 22, was a second-year student of computer science and engineering at BUET, and the two injured were his classmates. Muhtasim lived in Kalabagan area in Dhaka.
His father Masud Miah later filed a case with Rupganj police station under road transport act, and consequently, the three arrestees were produced before the court, Narayanganj police officers told reporters.
As per case statement, Muhtasim, along with his two classmates, went to Neela Market on a motorbike to spend quality time at 8pm Thursday.
At 3am Friday, police halted them on their way back at Neel Market intersection checkpost. As police were questioning the three victims riding the same motorbike, an unruly car suddenly appeared on the scene hitting the bike from behind.
Police immediately seized an empty bottle of alcoholic drink and a can of beer from inside the car as well as the car itself and the damaged motorbike. Dope tests were later administered on each of the tree arrestees.
Muhtasim’s body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. His two critically injured co-riders – Mehedy Hasan Khan, 22, from Cumilla and Amit Saha, 22, from Mymensingh – are undergoing treatment at Square Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital, respectively.
