
214 Rohingyas rescued from Malaysia-bound trawler in deep sea

The Bangladesh Navy rescued 214 Rohingya citizens from a Malaysia-bound trawler in the deep sea off the coast of Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
According to a press release issued by the Navy Headquarters to the media, the operation took place on Tuesday afternoon in the deep sea, southwest of Saint Martin’s Island in Teknaf Upazila.
Among those rescued were 118 men, 68 women, and 28 children, all of whom are residents of various Rohingya camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf.The press release stated that on Monday midnight, a trawler named ‘FB Kulsuma,’ carrying 214 Rohingya, departed from the Shaplapur coastal point in Baharchhara Union, Teknaf, heading toward Malaysia. By Tuesday afternoon, the trawler was located 44 nautical miles southwest of Saint Martin’s Island in the deep sea. Members of the Navy vessel ‘BNS Durjoy’ found the trawler’s movements suspicious and ordered it to stop. However, the trawler attempted to flee at high speed. After a chase, Navy personnel successfully intercepted and detained the vessel.
During initial questioning, the individuals on board revealed that they were en route to Malaysia via sea and identified themselves as displaced Rohingya citizens from Myanmar. Subsequently, the Rohingya were rescued and brought to the Coast Guard’s Saint Martin Station, where they were handed over.The Navy Headquarters’ press release further noted that the Coast Guard would take steps to hand over these Rohingya to their relatives in due course.
Lieutenant Commander Salauddin Rashid Tanvir, Officer-in-Charge of the Coast Guard Teknaf Station, confirmed that the rescued Rohingya were handed over to the Coast Guard’s Saint Martin Station by Navy personnel on Tuesday evening. They were provided with initial medical assistance there.He added that further actions to reunite the rescued Rohingya with their relatives would be taken in accordance with directives from the relevant authorities.
