
2,000 cattle, 10 shops washed away in Hatiya

More than two thousand cattle were washed away in Hatiya island upazila of Noakhali due to cyclone Rimal. Apart from this, crops of eight thousand hectares of land have been completely destroyed and 33 thousand families have been affected.
On Monday afternoon, 14 villages including nine villages of Harani, Chanandi, Sukhchar, Nalchira, Tamarddi, Char Ishwar, Sonadia and Nijhumdwip of the upazila were submerged under 4-5 feet of water. More than 200 pond fishes and livestock have been washed away by the house-houses.
Feroz Alam, a local resident, said that 10 shops at Nalchira Ghat were swept away by the tide. Due to the intensity of the waves with the tide, these shops are washed away in a moment before the eyes. Many people take goods and keep them on the embankment. But most of the shops were washed away with their goods.
It is learnt that about 50 thousand people of the upazila are living a miserable life due to tidal water and heavy rains. Many houses were destroyed. One lakh people are stuck in water.
Hatiya UNO Subhashis Chakma said that complete information on the damage caused by Cyclone Rimel in Hatia has not been prepared yet. The upazila administration is working to control the overall situation.
