1000 families are in fear of erosion at Daulatdia Ferry Ghat

Moynul Haque Mridha, Rajbari

About 1000 families are at risk of erosion in Ferighat No. 6 and 7 in Daulatdia of Goalando Upazila of Rajbari.

Local residents are constantly living day and night in fear of erosion. They have suffered erosion several times before. Locals will not be able to protect anything if the erosion is not prevented.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) authorities say that the entire Ferry Ghat area is at risk of erosion. And the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) says that an area of about two and a half kilometers from Launch Ghat to Ferry Ghat has been affected by Cyclone Rimal. Due to limited allocation, it is not possible to carry out erosion prevention work in full swing.

Locals said that after Cyclone Rimal, the water and erosion of Padma River is increasing every day.

The river banks are more eroded by the currents created by the rotation of the fans as the ferries enter and leave the wharf. BIWTA is placing sand filled geobags to prevent erosion. There are still many areas left. Around 1000 families of local Chhattar Member Para, Bahir Char Daulatdia, Majid Sheikh Para and Bepari Para are at risk of erosion along with ghat number 6 and 7.

Azgar Ali, a resident of Majid Sheikh's neighborhood, said that the river has been breaking for about three years. This year, more erosion has started after the cyclone. Those who have public representatives are not doing any work When everyone's house will move to the river, sandbags will be started in a hurry Nobody cares when it's dry.

Another resident of the ferry wharf said, the kind of erosion that has started at the ferry wharf, it seems as if the houses, the ferry wharf will sink! If the government looked at us a little, we would not have been victims of erosion. River management is very important here. People's representatives come and beg for votes at the beginning of voting. We have no one but Allah now.

Goalando Upazila Parishad Chairman Md. Mustafa Munshi, Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Joti Bikas Chandra, Mayor of the municipality. Nazrul Islam Mandal has already visited the affected areas.

Goalando Upazila Parishad Chairman. Mustafa Munshi said, the erosion of Padma has started in such a way that within 5 minutes while we are having a cup of tea, some houses are disappearing under the river due to the erosion of Padma. Many houses in Dhallapara have been washed away in the river in a few years. He urged the BIWTA to immediately remove the ferry from ghat number 7 and start work to prevent erosion. He said that ferries will not be allowed at ghat number 7 if the work is not started soon.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Joti Bikas Chandra said that after Cyclone Rimal, along with the increase in water in the Padma River, the erosion also increased. If the river management work is not started soon, large areas will disappear under the river bed. Last week, a road in Ferighat area disappeared. I have informed the citation authority about this.
