
Death row convict arrested 14 years after killing police officer

Fourteen years after the brutal murder of a police officer (Sub-Inspector), a death row convict named Liaquat Sheikh Leya (42) has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The arrest was made on Tuesday afternoon from Chardautia area in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district by members of RAB-10’s Faridpur Camp. Later in the evening, RAB-10’s Faridpur Camp Officer ASP Mizanur confirmed the arrest at a press briefing held at the RAB office in Faridpur.
According to RAB, Liaquat Sheikh is the son of Rahmat Sheikh from Nimtala area under Rajbari Sadar upazila. He had been living in the Chardautia area for a long time under the false identity of Raju Ahmed.
RAB officials said that Liaquat Sheikh was the prime accused in the murder of SI Mirajul Islam, who was stationed at the Dakbungalow Police Camp in Jhenaidah. The incident occurred on August 24, 2011, and a murder case was filed at Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station the same day. On July 7 this year, the Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-1 of Jhenaidah sentenced him to death in that case. Since then, he had been on the run. In addition, he faces six other cases, including arms and robbery charges.
At the press briefing, the RAB officer said, on the morning of August 24 that year, police recovered the body of Sub-Inspector Mirajul Islam from a water-filled ditch east of Jhenaidah Veterinary College. His hands and feet were tied, and he was still wearing his police uniform. The assailants murdered him brutally to loot his firearm, ammunition, motorcycle, and other government property.
