'Bhorer Pakhi’ School in Sundarganj lost to Teesta

The devastating erosion of the Teesta River has finally claimed the Bhorer Pakhi Government Primary School in Singijani village under Kapasia Union of Sundarganj Upazila in Gaibandha district. At around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, the remaining portion of the school was washed away by the river's strong current, leaving no trace of the institution.
According to local sources, on August 18, severe riverbank erosion swallowed one of the school's two semi-pucca tin-shed buildings and half of the other. Despite efforts to protect the remaining structure, it could not be saved. On Thursday, the rest of the school building collapsed into the river within moments due to intensified erosion.
The loss of the school has created serious uncertainty regarding the continuation of educational activities for its students. Local residents said that classes have remained suspended for the past week. Teachers, guardians, and community members fear that students' education will be severely disrupted unless alternative arrangements are made immediately.
Local guardian Ataur Rahman said, “We appealed to the concerned authorities to save the school. Now it is essential to ensure an alternative educational facility for the students without delay.”
The disappearance of the school into the river has caused deep concern and disappointment among local residents. They have urged the authorities to establish a new school at a safer location and provide necessary support to the affected students as soon as possible.
