Writ seeks HC directives to cancel power deals with Adani Group

Staff Correspondent

A writ petition was filed on Wednesday with the concerned branch of the High Court seeking necessary directives to cancel all power agreements with Adani Group of India.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister M Abdul Qaiyum lodged the writ with the court today. Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury will hear the petition.

On November 6, Abdul Qaiyum served a legal notice asking the government to review its electricity contract with Adani Group.

The notice asked the Chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board and the Secretary of the Energy Ministry to reply to the notice within three days. Otherwise, the notice sender will file a writ petition with the High Court seeking necessary directives in this regard.

The notice also called for a review committee consisting of energy and legal experts to give a detailed report.

A 25-year power purchase agreement was signed with Adani in 2017. At that time, no imported coal-based power plant was started in the country.

Electricity is supplied to Bangladesh from Adani's 1,600 MW power plants in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.
