Wife strangled to death, body set on fire husband dentenced to death after 21 years

A court in Bhola has sentenced a man to death nearly 21 years after he allegedly strangled his wife to death and set her body on fire in an attempt to mislead the investigation.
Judge Md. Enayet Ullah of the Bhola Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 delivered the verdict on Monday noon.
The verdict was confirmed by Md. Habibur Rahman (Bachchu), Additional Public Prosecutor and counsel for the state.
The condemned convict, Md. Bashir, is the son of Abdul Rashid of Musakandi village in Bapta Union under Bhola Sadar Upazila.
According to the court verdict, Bashir strangled his wife, Bilkis Begum, to death inside their home in the early hours of February 5, 2005. He subsequently set her body on fire in an attempt to conceal the killing and mislead the investigation. He then fled, leaving behind their two children.
Following the incident, the victim’s uncle, Md. Khorshed Alam, filed a murder case with Bhola Model Police Station.
Bashir remained absconding for a long period after the case was filed. After nearly 20 years, he surrendered before the court in 2025.
During the lengthy judicial proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence and witness testimony that established the charges against the accused. Subsequently, the court sentenced Md. Bashir to death.
