UP member allegedly evicted homeless widow from Guchchagram house defying UNO's order in Jhenaigati
Sherpur Correspondent
A UP Member named Golam Kibria has been accused of evicting a homeless widow, Momena Begum (65), from a government house in Guchcha village in Jhenaigati, Sherpur violating of the UNO's order.
Golam Kibria is the UP member of Sandhyakura ward number 5 of Nalkura union in the upazila. As a result, Momena Begum did not get a place to live.
Momena Begum is the wife of the late Fazal Mia of Gomra village in Nalkura union in the upazila. Fazal Mia was a daily wage laborer and homeless. It is known that Fazal Mia spent his entire life in someone else's house. He had a family of 4 members including 2 sons. His family was run by daily wage laborers. Fazal Mia died 7 years ago. It is known that after Fazal Mia's death, his wife Momena Begum worked as a daily wage laborer.
The widow's family lives on whatever she gets. If she doesn't go to work for a day, the stove in Momena's house doesn't light. Her sons get married and start separate families. But Momena Begum's life struggle is not over. She lives in someone else's house as a daily wage laborer. Due to her physical illness, she cannot even go to work every day. Even after this, Momena Begum's life struggle does not stop for the sake of earning a living. Her family lives without eating.
Momena Begum said that if she stays in someone else's house, she has to be loyal to them. And she is thrown out of her house only after she has picked sesame seeds from the palm. Momena Begum said that she cannot count how many houses she has stayed in in the last 40 years. Momena Begum has been living in the house of Suruj Mian in Gomra village for the past 4 years. But a few months ago, the owner of the house threw her out of the house. Later, Momena Begum was placed in the house of Anguri Begum (75), a widow resident of Gomra Guchcha village in Nalkura union. Journalists have been reporting on the plight of Momena Begum. The upazila administration has come to the fore. Later, Upazila Executive Officer Ashraful Alam Russell conducted a public and secret investigation through the land administration to find out whether there are any abandoned houses in the Gomra Guchchagram area of the union and found that 5 out of 30 houses were abandoned. The houses have been abandoned for the past decade.
Those who were given them do not live there. Later, on July 1, Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ashraful Alam Russell officially rehabilitated Sefali Begum and Momena Begum in 2 abandoned houses. But 2 days after the incident, some members of the local union council, including Upazila Executive Officer Ashraful Alam Russell, disobeyed the orders of UP member Golam Kibria and some others, forcibly evicted Momena Begum from that house and put another person in that house. In addition, they were planning to evict Shefali Begum from the other house and were threatening her. To handle the situation, Shefali Begum's father Sona Mia filed a complaint with the police station seeking security. It is learned that some people have taken the house as a gift and sold it to others.
They have let other people stay. However, even after 40 years, the homeless widow Momena Begum has not been able to find a place to live. UP member Golam Kibria said that Momena Begum was evicted on the orders of the land administration. Nalkura Union Land Assistant Officer Md. Rukunuzzaman said that we have rehabilitated them and did not ask anyone to be evicted. When we spoke to Upazila Executive Officer Ashraful Alam Russell in this regard, he said that Momena Begum has been given a widow's allowance card. He said that he will look into the matter of the house.
