With the slogan ‘Adorn DU with Native, Not Foreign Trees,’ a tree census has commenced on Wednesday  at the University of Dhaka. 

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan inaugurated the tree census initiative as the chief guest at a ceremony held at the Mall Chattar. The Arboriculture Center of the university is conducting the census in collaboration with the Dhaka University Environment Society and Green Future Foundation.

The inaugural event was chaired by Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Director of the Arboriculture Center. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Prof Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha and Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, the Proctor, were present as special guests. Officials and staff of the Arboriculture Center, leaders of the Environment Society, representatives from Green Future Foundation, and students were also in attendance.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan thanked the organizers for initiating the tree census and remarked that this effort will play an important role in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the various tree species on the university campus. He expressed hope that the census would also contribute to raising awareness and encouraging the planting of native species. Through this initiative, scientific planning for the use of various areas on campus can be ensured. It will also support the conservation of the natural environment and biodiversity of the campus, and facilitate future development activities.

It is mentioned  that the tree census is being conducted under the overall supervision of Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Director of the Arboriculture Center. A 10-member team comprising researchers and students from the Department of Botany is carrying out the project.
