A young shopkeeper succumbed to injuries after being stabbed over a dispute involving two unpaid cigarettes in the Char Kewar area of Munshiganj Sadar.

 Mahim Sarkar (20), the victim, had been under medical treatment for two days before passing away on Friday at around 1:30 PM at a private hospital in Kakrail, Dhaka. He was the son of Sabuj Sarkar from the Baghai Kandi area.

The prime accused, Naim Sarkar (26), son of the late Rahman Shikar from the same area, has been arrested and is currently in jail custody.

Rakib Hossain Rocky, a member of ward no. 7 of Char Kewar Union Parishad and a cousin of the deceased, confirmed the details.

Police conducted a raid last Wednesday and arrested the prime accused, Naim Sarkar. Mahim's father, Sabuj Sarkar, later filed a case with the Sadar police station naming Naim as the main accused.

According to the case statement, Mahim was sleeping inside his grocery store around 3 AM on Tuesday night when local resident Naim Sarkar tried to take two cigarettes without paying. Mahim objected, prompting Naim to verbally abuse him and leave without paying. Later that day, around 12:30 PM, Naim called Mahim again, hurled insults over the phone, and asked him to come to his house with his father.

At around 3 PM, when Mahim was on his way to Naim’s house with his father, Naim attacked him on the road with a knife, seriously injuring Mahim in the chest. Locals rescued Mahim and first took him to Munshiganj General Hospital, then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and later to a private hospital in Kakrail where he was placed on life support. He passed away there on Friday.

Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC  Md. Saiful Alam said, “After the stabbing, police conducted a raid and arrested the accused Naim. Mahim’s father, Sabuj Sarkar, initially filed an attempted murder case which will now be converted into a murder case following Mahim’s death.”
