Self-reliant farmers raise 'Bau-Dak' ducks in Matiranga
Alamgir Hossain, Matiranga (Khagrachari)
Rina Begum, a female farmer entrepreneur, was visiting her duck farm in the soft afternoon sun. At one of her calls, a flock of ducks came running from the courtyard of her house. Upon entering the farm, she said, 'I have been raising ducks for 6 years. I have never seen such a profitable breed before.'
For the past 5 years, Rina Begum, a female entrepreneur from Jianagar area of Matiranga upazila of Khagrachari, had been raising indigenous ducks in her family farm, but it had become difficult to make a profit due to the high mortality rate. Recently, with the help of a private organization, IDF, she started raising a new breed of ducks, 'Bau-Dak'. When asked about her experience, Rina Begum said, 'It was difficult to survive on the income I used to earn from raising ducks earlier. And now, in just 10-12 weeks, the Bau-Dak weighs two to two and a half kilograms, and lays 220 to 230 eggs a year. It is more profitable than domestic ducks.' In addition, 12 local entrepreneurs have succeeded in raising 'Bau-Dak' ducks under her supervision.
Farmer Rina Begum also said that last year, with the help of IDF, she started a new farm for the first time with 50 ducklings. She has already made a lot of profit by raising this fast-growing breed of ducks. 'Bau-Dak' ducks produce several times more meat and eggs than domestic ducks. Currently, there are more than a hundred ducks on her farm.
Farmer Mahbub Hossain from the same area said, 'Along with domestic ducks, I started raising 50 Bau-Dak ducks with the help of IDF. They are producing several times more meat and eggs than other ducks. So I am planning to raise Bau-type ducks commercially.
Dr. Zakirul Islam, IDF Animal Resources Officer, said, "With the funding of the non-governmental development organization PKSF, 13 farmers in Matiranga Upazila have been given Bau-Has farm demonstrations. Of these, 11 were given 50 ducklings each for meat production and two were given 240 Bau ducklings for egg production. IDF is advising and supporting the farmers. Since this breed of ducks is less prone to diseases, production is also quite good. The environment and climate here are very suitable for raising Bau-Has. If farmers want, they can set up a commercial farm for it."
Dr. Sumen Chakma, Matiranga Upazila Livestock Officer, said, "Bau-Dak is able to adapt to the country's climate. It gains weight quickly, has fewer diseases, and lays more eggs. Therefore, it is profitable for farmers.
