A human chain and protest rally were held in front of the Deputy Commissioner office in Noakhali demanding the immediate arrest and trial of those responsible for the murder of Abul Hossain Rafi (19), a Chhatra Dal activist from Ashwadia Union in Sadar upazila.
On Sunday (May 25) at 11 a.m., the one-hour-long protest was organized under the banner of local residents. The rally was attended by Rafi’s father, mother, relatives, local residents, as well as leaders and activists of the BNP and Chhatra Dal.
During the program, Rafi’s father Abul Kalam Azad, Ashwadia Union Chhatra Dal president Fakhrul Islam, and others from the local community and student wing gave speeches.
Speakers expressed anger and frustration over the failure to arrest the accused, village doctor Gias Uddin Shahin, even four days after the incident. They demanded his arrest and capital punishment within the next 72 hours.
It is mentioned that on Thursday last afternoon, Rafi was playing football with friends in Alipur village of Ashwadia Union. When one of his friends suffered a cut lip, they took him to village doctor Gias Uddin Shahin (60) for treatment. When Shahin refused to treat the injury, an argument broke out with Rafi, during which Shahin allegedly stabbed him.
Rafi was first taken to Noakhali General Hospital and later transferred towards Dhaka in critical condition, but he died on the way that night.
Following the incident, Rafi’s father, Abul Kalam Azad, filed a case at Sudharam Model Police Station naming Gias Uddin Shahin as the accused.
OC of Sudharam Model Police Station, Kamrul Islam, said that the accused fled the area after the incident and that police are continuing efforts to arrest him.
