Palestine and the Politics of Powerlessness.
A R Salauddin Ferdous
Palestine – the name brings to mind images of bloody children, ruined houses and the cries of thousands
of innocent people. For years, the Palestinian people have been victims of Israeli occupation, siege, and
oppression. Their lives are like a dark tunnel, with no end in sight. Despite this brutal reality, there is no
one to stand by the Palestinians. There is only one Jewish state in the world, Israel. About 10 million Jews live there. On the other hand,
more than 2 billion Muslims live in 57 Muslim countries. These Muslims have unwavering support for Palestine. Now the question is, why don't Muslim countries take military action against Israel aggression in Palestine? The answer lies in a complex web of political, economic, and strategic calculations. Muslim countries refrain from direct military attacks against Israel, as such a move could trigger severe sanctions and reactions from the Western world. These sanctions and reactions could have a negative impact on the
economy and stability of the Middle East. Moreover, the support of the United States, the European Union and NATO member states for Israel is well known. This support could be even stronger in a war situation, which would create strategic challenges for Muslim countries.
Another key factor is the extensive dependence of many Muslim nations on the United States. The United States is Israel& largest ally and supporter. The United States provides Israel with about $3.8 billion in military aid annually. The United States also uses veto power on Isra s behalf in the United Nations. Many Muslim countries are economically, militarily, and politically dependent on the United States. For
example, Saudi Arabia and Egypt receive military aid from the United States. This dependence makes them wary of engaging in direct war against Israel. Internal instability also plays a pivotal role. Many Muslim countries are going through internal political crises, economic hardship and social unrest. For example: the civil war in Syria, the economic crisis and political instability in Lebanon, the internal political instability and economic crisis in Pakistan or the economic problems and political crisis in Egypt. In this situation, engaging in war against Israel is a luxury for them. Engaging in war may deepen their internal crisis.Military imbalance is another factor that cannot be ignored. Israel's army is one of the most powerful armies in the world. They have powerful air defense systems like Iron Dome and David's Sling and a powerful intelligence network like Mossad. It is believed that Israel has many nuclear warheads, the
number of which is between 80 and 400. If Muslim countries unite and attack Israel, Israel can use nuclear weapons. This will cause terrible damage to the entire Middle East. On the other hand, only Pakistan has nuclear weapons among Muslim countries. However, it cannot be said for sure whether Pakistan will use these weapons against Israel or not, because Pakistan has a long-standing dispute with
its neighbor India. On the other hand, it is still not certain whether Iran has nuclear weapons. Moreover, history has shown that Muslim countries failed to achieve the expected success in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the 1967 Six-Day War involving Egypt, Syria and Jordan against Israel, and the 1973 Yom Kippur War — creating a lingering sense of fear among them. Some Muslim nations have shifted strategy entirely. They developing relations with Israel is a strategic decision. For example, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan have normalized relationswith Israel for economic, technological and security reasons, which has changed the geopolitical equation
in the Middle East. These countries see developing relations with Israel as part of their regional and global strategic interests.
The internal division and weakness of the Palestinian leadership is a major challenge for Muslim countries. The political division between Fatah and Hamas has weakened the Palestinian struggle. Due to this division, Muslim countries are unable to play a united role on the Palestinian issue. Many countries have lost interest in taking direct action against Israel due to the division and weakness of the Palestinian
leadership. Moreover, a profound lack of unity within the Muslim world continues to be one of the greatest obstacles
to mounting a collective resistance against Israel. There are political, economic and ideological divisions among various Muslim countries. There is also a Shia-Sunni division in the Muslim world, which is a major obstacle to building unity. The long-standing dispute between Iran and Saudi Arabia is an example of this. Again, there is political tension between Turkey and Egypt. Due to these divisions, Muslim
countries are unable to unite against Israel. On the global stage, one cannot overlook the unflinching support Israel receives from Western powers, particularly the United States. American Christian evangelicals consider the establishment of the state of Israel important according to the prophecy of the Bible. According to their belief, the re-establishment and support of Israel is a prerequisite for the second coming of Christ. As a result, this group supports Israel and influences US policy through their political influence. Moreover, the cultural and religious basis of the United States is influenced by Judeo-Christian values, which play a role in increasing sympathy and support for Israel. Again, there is a strong Jewish community in the United States, which is quite influential in political, economic and cultural fields. Their support is reflected in US policy towards Israel. These political, economic, and cultural factors have made the alliance between the United States and Israel closer. Although the European Union speaks out in favor of human rights and international law, it generally shows restraint in taking a strong stand against Israel due to internal European politics and strong trade relations with Israel. On the other hand, Israel is a strategic ally for the West. Israel plays an important role in protecting the interests of Western countries in the Middle East. Israel is a strong ally for Western countries, especially against Iran and other adversaries. Russia and China have occasionally supported initiatives to introduce an arms embargo against Israel in the context of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but they are generally more focused on protecting their own strategic interests. Lastly, Influential countries have veto power in international organizations such as the United Nations. As a result, proposals to take strong measures against Israel are often blocked. However, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is not just a political issue; it is a question of humanity and justice. Whatever the reasons behind Muslim countries and world leaders not taking strong action against Israel, the suffering of the Palestinians touches the moral responsibility of the world community. Muslim
countries should forget their internal divisions and unite and world leaders should rise above their
