Meghna River overflows : Low-lying areas flooded, hundreds of houses at risk of erosion in Noakhali

 Md. Selim, Noakhali

Due to the influence of low pressure in the sea, abnormal tides are flowing in the Meghna River in Hatiya, an isolated island upazila of Noakhali.

Due to the strong tide, some parts of Muchapur Union and Char Elahi Union of Companiganj and low-lying areas including Hatiyar Nijhum Island have been flooded. Erosion has occurred in some places. As a result, more than a hundred houses have been exposed to erosion.

As of Saturday (July 26) afternoon, more than 50 houses were evacuated due to severe river erosion in the Tankir Ghat and Chairman Ghat areas of the upazila.

It is learnt  that the main road of Nijhum Dwip was completely submerged in the tidal water on Friday morning. At the same time, the Namar Bazar area of Nijhum Dwip was flooded. Water entered people's businesses. Many fish in the ponds of the area were washed away. In addition, several villages in Nalchira, Sonadia and Sukhchar unions of the upazila were flooded by the tidal water.

Locals said that many houses, croplands and roads have been flooded by the tidal water. Thousands of families have been affected by this. This terrible weather has become a threat, especially for wild animals, including deer, in the Nijhum Dwip National Park.

On the other hand, several areas of the district town of Maijdi are still waterlogged. This has caused great suffering to the people. Local residents said that this situation has arisen due to the accumulation of garbage in the drains and canals of Noakhali Municipality, preventing water from draining.

District Meteorological Officer Md. Rafiqul Islam said, "The coastal areas are experiencing gusty winds and drizzle due to the impact of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Noakhali recorded 51 millimeters of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to stay close to the coast until further notice."

Hatia UNO Md. Alauddin said, Sukhchar Union, some parts of Sonadia Union and several villages of Nijhumdwip Union are under water. There is 2-3 feet of water in some places. An embankment in Sukhchar broke on Friday and flooded the area.

The UNO also said that water has risen in the fishermen's villages outside the beri. In several places outside the beri and in some places in Nalchira union, many people have moved their houses and shops due to river erosion. This afternoon, as the river condition has improved somewhat, boats are plying on some routes.
