Jute growers unhappy in Sundarganj
Although the jute market in Gaibandha Sundarganj is better than the last few years, farmers are unhappy. The sale and purchase of jute has become a craze in the markets of Sundarganj Upazila.
Jute is being sold for 3,900 to 4,200 taka per maund. A lot of jute was imported to the upazila markets of Mirganj, Shobhaganj, Belka, Panchpir, and Nagar Kathgara. Last year, the import of jute was much less. According to information from the Department of Agricultural Extension, it is known that the target of jute cultivation was set on 4,545 hectares of land in the 2025/26 financial year, but 4,342 vectors have been achieved.
A few jute farmers including Nabir Hossain said that last year, 25 maunds of jute were produced on 1 acre of land, but this time the same land produced 10 maunds of jute. This is because many fields are destroyed by continuous rain at the beginning of sowing. After growing, many trees die in the bud. If the fields are thinned, a lot of weeds grow. It costs a lot to remove and maintain these weeds. On the other hand, jute plants are usually 7 to 8 feet tall.
