JICA delegation meets DU VC :  Interest  in providing assistance in   dev  of higher education, research

A 6-member delegation led by Mr. Nishi Rizuki, Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), met with the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam, at his office on  Tuesday.
 
. The other members of the delegation are Dr. Tsuyoshi Usagawa, Emeritus Professor of Kumamoto University, Dr. Tsuyoshi Usagawa, Senior Advisor, Human Development Division, JICA, Sayeri Muto, Mochizuki Hiroshi, and Otani Onri.

At this time, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Dhaka University, Prof  Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof  Dr. Saifuddin Md. Tariq, Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Sciences, Prof Dr. Md. Aminul Islam Talukder, Chairman of the Department of Pharmacy, Professor Dr. Zakir Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Prof Dr. Shayla Kabir, Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Prof Dr. Shimul Halder, Chairman of the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, Dr. Sugata Ahmed, and Director of the Public Relations Office, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam were present.

During the meeting, they discussed the implementation of a project titled 'Potential Yen Loan Project for Higher Education Assistance in Bangladesh' funded by JICA. The members of the JICA delegation expressed their interest in providing assistance in establishing an eco-system and capacity building for the development of higher education and research at Dhaka University. They also expressed their interest in providing assistance in developing research skills, improving the quality of higher education and research, and strengthening the relationship between the education and industry sectors. They emphasized on undertaking more joint collaborative academic and research programs between Dhaka University and various universities in Japan and strengthening networks between regional and local universities. The head of the JICA delegation presented a draft proposal for the project in this regard.

Vice Chancellor Prof  Dr. ABM Obaidul Islam thanked the members of the JICA delegation for accepting this project. He expressed his interest in working with JICA to develop academic and research activities at Dhaka University. He said that Bangladesh and Japan have enjoyed a long-standing friendly relationship. 
 
Referring to Japan as one of the largest development partners of Bangladesh, the Vice Chancellor said that we need more support from Japan in expanding laboratory-based education such as artificial intelligence (AI), third language, biology, software engineering, pharmacy and environmental science.
 
He sought JICA's cooperation in undertaking a joint 'Lab to Lab' program between Dhaka University and various universities in Japan to conduct research effectively. He sought JICA's financial support in maintaining the equipment of various laboratories of Dhaka University, including the Center for Advanced Research in Sciences.
