India has imposed a ban on the import of specific jute products and woven fabrics from Bangladesh through all land routes amid worsening relations between the two nations.

The shipments of these goods will still be permitted through the Nhava Sheva seaport in Maharashtra, according to a notification from India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

The goods under these restrictions include jute products, flax tow and waste, jute and other bast fibres, jute, single flax yarn, single yarn of jute, multiple folded, woven fabrics or flex and unbleached woven fabrics of jute.

The DGFT clarified that these port restrictions will not apply to Bangladeshi goods transiting through India en route to Nepal and Bhutan.

It said that re-exports of these restricted products from Bangladesh to India via Nepal and Bhutan will be prohibited.

"Import from Bangladesh shall not be allowed from any land port on the India-Bangladesh border. However, it is allowed only through Nhava Sheva seaport," said the DGFT, adding, "The imports of certain goods from Bangladesh to India are regulated with immediate effect."

Similar measures were taken earlier this year.

On May 17, India placed port restrictions on the import of items such as readymade garments and processed foods from Bangladesh.

On April 9, India revoked the trans-shipment facility it had provided to Bangladesh for exporting goods to the Middle East, Europe and other regions, excluding Nepal and Bhutan.

Bilateral trade between the two nations reached USD 12.9 billion in 2023-24. In the current financial year, India's exports to Bangladesh amounted to USD 11.46 billion, while imports from Bangladesh stood at USD 2 billion.
