Halima Begum living like an exile in her own home in Sherpur
Khorshed Alam, Sherpur
In Jhinaigati, Sherpur, Halima Begum finds herself a stranger in her own home. The rooms she resides in have long become unfit for habitation, yet she is unable to renovate them due to opposition and conspiracies from her nephews and grandchildren. As a result, Halima and her family are forced to live an inhumane existence in a dilapidated house. Halima Begum, wife of Junab Ali, hails from Dakshin Dariarpara village in Dhanshail Union of the upazila.
It is known that Junab Ali’s ancestral home is in Ranisimul village of the neighboring Sreebordi upazila. Lacking resources, he married Halima Begum and settled in Dariarpara as a ghar jamai (live-in son-in-law). The couple has one biological daughter and an adopted daughter, both of whom have been married off. Halima Begum continues to live in the house built by her parents on her ancestral land.
Halima Begum alleges that her nephews, including Chamad and Awal, along with others, have been occupying her paternal property without dividing it among the heirs. She claims that a few days ago, under the pretext of purchasing farmland, her nephews took her to the sub-registrar’s office and tricked her into signing a deed. When she attempted to repair the two rooms of her parents’ house on her ancestral plot, her nephews obstructed her efforts. Unable to renovate, Halima has been living in the broken-down house. She further accuses her nephews of plotting to evict her from her parents’ homestead, fraudulently acquiring her land under the guise of buying farmland, and now conspiring to drive her out entirely.
According to Halima, her nephews frequently provoke quarrels with her under various pretexts, making her life unbearable. For days, she has been knocking on the doors of the administration and local leaders seeking justice, but with her nephews being influential, she has received no remedy. Consequently, Halima Begum and her family endure extreme hardship and insecurity, living like exiles in their own home.
An on-site investigation revealed that Halima Begum’s two rooms are indeed unfit for living. During the visit, her nephews Chamad, Awal, and others grew agitated in the presence of journalists. As soon as the reporters left, Halima Begum’s nephews and grandchildren allegedly attempted to assault her husband, Junab Ali. Seeking redress, Junab Ali filed a complaint with the Jhinaigati police station as the plaintiff.
When contacted, Chamad said, “We have a large family with many children. Due to limited space at home, we purchased a portion of our aunt’s land. She has no land left in the homestead. That’s why she cannot stay here. She will get her share of the farmland, and that will be sorted out.”
Confirming receipt of the complaint, Jhinaigati Police Station’s OC Md. Al Amin said, “We have received the complaint, and necessary actions are underway pending investigation.”
