The Election Commission (EC) is ready to hold the next general elections either in late 2025 or the first half of 2026, as announced by the chief adviser of the interim government.
Election Commissioner Tahmida Ahmed shared this information on Monday hours after Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation marking the Victory Day where he indicated national election by late 2025 or first half of 2026.
Talking to journalists at the EC Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, Tahmida Ahmed said that they are preparing to hold the next national polls in late 2025 or the first half of 2026.
Earlier on Monday morning, the chief advisor said that the national election could be held in late 2025 or early 2026, subject to necessary reforms and the accurate preparation of the voter list.
He said, “I have repeatedly appealed to you to hold the election after completing all major reforms. However, due to political consensus, if we are required—again, I emphasise 'if'—to conduct the election based on only a few key reforms and the accurate preparation of the voter list, then it might be possible to hold the election by late 2025.”
