Discussion on women's economic empowerment at DU

A discussion titled “ Care Economy and the Labour Market: Rethinking Women's Economic Agency in Bangladesh ” was held on Thursday at Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, jointly organized by the Center for Gender and Development Studies, University of Dhaka, and UN Women Bangladesh.
Chaired by Professor Dr. Sanjeeda Akhtar, Director of the Center for Gender and Development Studies, the discussion was addressed by Dr. Saima Haque Bidisha, former Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) and Professor of the Department of Economics of Dhaka University, Shaheen Anam, Executive Director of the Foundation for the People, and Dr. Tania Haque, Professor of the Department of Women and Gender Studies.
The speakers said that women's contribution to the economy of Bangladesh is very important. Unpaid work such as taking care of household and family members is still dependent on women. These jobs create various obstacles in the participation of women in the labor market and economic independence. To ensure women's economic empowerment, the importance of care work must be recognized and effective policies must be formulated in this regard.
