The Deputy Commissioner Gold Cup Football Tournament-2026 has begun in Munshiganj amidst the excitement of the gallery-filled audience and a festive atmosphere. The Tongibari Upazila team started the tournament by defeating Mirkadim Municipality 2-0 in the opening match.

The opening match of the tournament was held at the Bir Shrestha Shaheed Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj on Tuesday afternoon. Six upazilas and two municipalities of the district are participating in the tournament.

The chief guest at the opening ceremony was Md. Kamruzzaman Ratan, MP for Munshiganj-3 constituency. Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Syeda Nurmahal Ashrafi presided over the event. Superintendent of Police Md. Menhazul Alam was the special guest.

District Council Administrator AKM Iradat, Deputy Director of Local Government Mousumi Mahbub, Additional District Magistrate Md. Rezaul Karim, Principal of Government Harganga College Md. Shamim Ahsan Khan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rev) Md. Mahmudur Rahman Khondoker and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gen) Md. Zubayer Hossain along with Upazila Executive Officers of various upazilas of the district were present at the event. In addition, officials of various government and private departments, sports organizers, local dignitaries and media personnel were present.

The national flag, the flags of the district sports organizations and the participating teams were hoisted with the national anthem. Later, the champion trophy of the tournament and the jerseys of the participating teams were unveiled. The opening of the tournament was announced by releasing balloons.

In the opening match, the Tongibari Upazila team started playing aggressive football from the beginning. In the competitive battle between the players of the two teams, Tongibari scored two goals. In the end, there were no more goals and Tongibari left the field with a 2-0 victory.

The crowd of spectators at the stadium started increasing since the afternoon to watch the game. At one stage, the gallery was filled to the brim. The entire stadium was filled with applause and excitement of the spectators in support of their favorite team.

The organizers said that this tournament has been organized with the aim of developing the talent of upazila and municipality level players and increasing healthy competition and mutual friendship in the field of sports. The final match of this week-long tournament will be held on August 24.
